This has been good series of paintings for me, a chance to explore layering, glazing and softened edges more deeply. I had planned them before the world got extra crazy this year. Painful and ugly things happened to Floyd, Arbery, and Taylor on film and the Black Lives Matter movement finally gained traction with ALL people. We are all, here and overseas, truly expressing our anger and frustration, and it felt strange to focus on such an introspective group of paintings. My impulse with these paintings was to combine spirit animals, Monarchs, and the Milky Way. I wanted to contemplate what we are in danger of losing in the world and how achingly beautiful it is. Now I am digesting all the input from this country's fledgling attempt to finally at least face the racism that has polluted it. I am an optimist.. Can't help it, so I want to be part of whatever it is that visual artists can do for the future. Stay tuned! Comments are closed.
